  • Google Pixel monthly updates will no longer shoot for a launch on the first Monday of the month.
  • Instead, Google will release the update when it’s good and ready, whenever that might be.
  • Over the past year, Google has been less reliable with its monthly updates anyway.

There are three types of updates for Pixel phones. The first is a security patch, which comes every month, usually on the first Monday. The second type is called a Feature Drop, and they land every quarter. Finally, Android upgrades bring you to a new version of the operating system, which comes once yearly.

With Google’s announcement yesterday of the Pixel 8 series getting a whopping seven years of upgrades, the schedule is also changing slightly. The goal of launching the Google Pixel monthly updates on the first Monday of each month is no more. Security patches will still come once each month — no need to worry about that — but Google will no longer aim for the first Monday goal. Instead, the updates will come whenever Google thinks they’re ready.
