  • Samsung’s latest foldables have reportedly enjoyed much higher pre-orders in Korea.
  • It’s claimed that 800,000 Galaxy Z series units have been pre-ordered in the market.
  • The Z Flip 3 apparently accounted for 60% of the units.

Samsung is coming in hot with the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 3, offering lower price tags, water resistance, and improved durability. Now, it seems like the phones are seeing a much better commercial reception in their home market than previous models.

Yonhap News reports that 800,000 Galaxy Z series foldables were pre-ordered in Korea during the week-long pre-order period that ended yesterday (August 23), citing its own sources. The outlet says 600,000 units were pre-ordered via mobile carriers and 200,000 units were pre-ordered as unlocked devices.

The news outlet also claimed that the Galaxy Z Flip 3 accounted for 60% of the pre-orders. In other words, ~480,000 Galaxy Z Flip 3 devices were pre-ordered in Korea versus the Galaxy Z Fold 3’s ~320,000. This wouldn’t be a surprise as the clamshell foldable is significantly cheaper than the Z Fold 3.

Our verdict: Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 review — No Note replacement, but a fine foldable

For what it’s worth, last year’s Galaxy Z Fold 2 reportedly hit 80,000 units pre-ordered in Korea. So the Galaxy Z Fold 3’s performance in particular would certainly be a massive step up in comparison.

These reported figures only represent one market and a short period of time though, so we’ll be keen to see global sales numbers down the line. After all, it’s believed that Samsung’s Galaxy S21 recorded great first month sales in the US but poor global sales after six months.

Nevertheless, Samsung’s sensible strategy of offering cheaper, tougher foldables seems to tentatively be a step in the right direction.
