  • A new report suggests we can expect foldable phones from Google, Vivo, Xiaomi, and others later this year.
  • The devices will reportedly sport UTG technology with screens provided by Samsung Display, BOE, or CSOT.
  • The report also includes details of the phones’ screen dimensions and layouts.

According to a new report from Korea, a slew of forthcoming foldable phones gunning for Samsung’s offerings will sport ultra-thin glass (UTG). Information garnered by The Elec suggests that several Chinese manufacturers and Google will debut foldable phones later this year featuring the flexible material. The new report also spills details about the devices’ screen dimensions.

In May, we first gained word of a flood of devices hitting the market at the bottom end of 2021. But this report gives us more context in that regard.

The foldable phones coming later this year

For starters, new details have emerged regarding Honor‘s foldable. The device, referred to as the Magic Fold, is also set to launch with an 8.03-inch inner display supplied by BOE and wearing the company’s UTG competitor and a 6.45-inch outer screen, per the report.

Xiaomi’s rumored Mi Mix Fold successor will reportedly feature an 8.01-inch display with UTG supplied by Samsung Display. It may also include a 6.52-inch external screen provided by CSOT. It’s due to launch “within the year,” supporting previous information stemming from China. The dimensions of the displays suggest the phone won’t be a clamshell as initially postulated, but rather a larger tablet-style foldable.

Vivo and Oppo are planning their foldables, too, reportedly due in Q4 2021 and 2022, respectively. Vivo’s device may pack an 8-inch display with UTG and a 6.5-inch outer screen, mirroring previous reports.

Oppo’s device will reportedly be smaller, packing a 7.1-inch folding screen and a 5.45-inch outer display. The device was believed to wear a 7.7-inch primary display with a smaller external screen. Of course, it’s not unimaginable that Oppo could launch more than one folding phone in 2022.

Finally, Google’s foldable phone also gets a mention. The device will reportedly pack a 7.6-inch foldable display with UTG, reiterating previous reports. The Elec report doesn’t mention any cover display, so it remains unclear what Google plans with its device.

Samsung will likely be the first firm to launch its latest generation of foldable phones. The Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 3 are both set to debut next month, per rumors.
