Naomi Osaka

Four-time Grand Slam tennis champion Naomi Osaka is the focus of Netflix‘s latest social documentary. The flick takes an introspective look at Osaka’s life, from her thoughts about success to the external pressures of being a global sports personality. “No one really knows all the sacrifices that you make just to be good,” she says in the trailer. Val

The star of such classics as Batman Forever and True Romance, Val Kilmer details his life-long love for film-making in this bittersweet found footage-style documentary. While fans will love the clips of Kilmer on set goofing around with Sean Penn and Kevin Bacon, the film ultimately highlights the Hollywood star’s battle with cancer and his triumphant return to the spotlight. Val will debut in theatres on July 23 before hitting Amazon Prime Video on August 6.

Resort to Love

Produced by Alicia Keys and starting Christina Milian, Resort to Love is that cliche-laden rom-com we all need right now. Set in Mauritius, Erica Wilson (Milian) travels to the island to forget her ex-fiance (Jay Pharaoh) and live her dream as a singer. But, as tropes would have it, he’s also on the island planning to wed his new fiance, played by Christiani Pitts. It’s a wonderfully silly, light-hearted flick and the welcome (virtual) holiday we’re all craving. Catch it on Netflix from July 29.

Fear Street Part 2: 1978

Finally, here’s something you can watch right now. The second flick in the R.L. Stine-inspired Fear Street trilogy lands today (July 9). While the first part took place with all the quirky high-school horror charms of Shadyside in the 1990s, the sequel is set in 1978. This part seemingly answers the question — “What if Stranger Things was a horror?” You can catch Part 2 on Netflix from July 9. The Fear Street trilogy draws to a close on July 16, when the Shadyside horrors’ root cause finally comes to light.

Scenes from a Marriage

Something a little closer to home now. Based on the eponymous 1973 Swedish drama from Ingmar Bergman, this remake of Scenes from a Marriage throws the lens over the stresses and stressors of a modern American partnership. It stars Oscar Isaac and Jessica Chastain, decidedly warm color grading, and a house that would rack up karma on many subreddits. The miniseries might be a retelling, but it’s an introspective story that many will appreciate at this uncertain point in human history. Catch it on HBO Max in September.

Despite his predicament and fading dreams of becoming a musician, Corman always tries to present a brave, positive face in public. Behind the scenes and with close acquaintances, he’s anything but. If you loved 2009’s 500 Days of Summer, you’d probably love this series. Catch it on Apple TV Plus from August 6.
