- Motorola has demonstrated its improved take on over-the-air charging.
- The company’s Space Charging solution offers the ability to charge four devices at once.
- The improved tech also allows users to charge devices at up to three meters away.
Xiaomi was the first major brand to demonstrate air charging technology, showing off its Mi Air Charge solution earlier this year that allows users to charge their devices over the air. Motorola quickly followed with a brief demonstration of its own tech, but the company is back today with more details and a video.
Motorola took to its Weibo account to post more details regarding its so-called Space Charging technology. At the time of its initial reveal, the company showed the ability to simultaneously charge a couple of devices over a one-meter radius. But it looks like Motorola has improved matters in this regard.
The company says its Space Charging tech now allows up to four devices to charge at once at a distance of up to three meters. The solution also offers a 100-degree area of coverage, Motorola claims. Check out the official video below for a demonstration of the updated tech.
Motorola also notes that the air charging station has 1,600 antennas, can pass through paper and other obstructions, and is able to pause charging in a specific area when a human body is detected.
There doesn’t seem to be an official word on maximum charging speeds, although serial tipster Digital Chat Station says it tops out at 5W speeds. That’s very slow in the era of 4,000mAh and 5,000mAh batteries, so you should still keep the traditional wired charger handy if you need a quick boost.
Nevertheless, the slow speed makes sense if the phone is going to be constantly charged in this manner, much like some people leave their phones on a wireless charging pad during the day. A maximum of 5W charging shouldn’t be a problem for other accessories either, like Bluetooth earbuds or smartwatches.
