Unlike buying directly from Samsung, which only offers you the full trade-in credit for a Galaxy Z Fold 2, the phones that qualify for the $1,000 maximum from Verizon can be relatively old models. The likes of the OnePlus 8 and the Pixel 4 score you the full amount, as does the Galaxy S8 Plus.
The additional $500 credit indicates Verizon’s interest in getting your custom ASAP. They’ll cover the cost of payoff or early termination charges to your existing carrier as an incentive to make the move, in the form of a Virtual Prepaid Mastercard.
