- A new report suggests there could be a new version of the Chromecast with Google TV for 2022.
- The codename for the device is allegedly “Boreal.”
- Not much is known about it, but we hope it fixes the biggest problem with its predecessor.
Updated, January 24, 2022 (03:01 PM ET): Not long after publishing the article below, news broke via Protocol that this rumored new Chromecast could be a lower-end model. Protocol contends the new Chromecast could be limited to 1080p streams to help differentiate it from the current model, which supports 4K resolutions.
Interestingly, Protocol also says the new Chromecast with Google TV for 2022 could support the AV1 codec. This would make it superior to the current model while still being sub-optimal due to its lack of 4K. This will make technically minded buyers torn, no doubt.
